ABOUT MICAL

Mical Asefaw is an Eritrean-American poet, activist, and blogger. She was born in Khartoum, Sudan in a refugee camp and came to the U.S. as an infant refugee. She grew up in San Francisco’s Harlem of the West in the African American and Eritrean communities. Mical draws on her history to create spoken word pieces that inspire others to think critically about race, gender, and language and uses her words to break down barriers and uplift her peoples.

Mical Asefaw attended Mills College and earned a BA in economics and an MBA. She has performed at Mills College The Center for Transformative Action, the Village Project’s Kwanza at SF City Hall, MoAD’s Community Voices Series, Black Freighter Press’ “The Docks” series with Tongo Eisen-Martin, Berkeley Arts Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and SF Juneteenth Festival.
